TIRANA, Dec. 3 – A lawyer, Bashkim Hoxha, 58, was arrested over weekend after he sent threatening phone messages to Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Police did not clarify what the threats had been, and Hoxha told a judge during his arraignment that he had been in a drunken stupor when he sent the messages and he did not remember anything.
Local media reported that Hoxha had sent SMS messages to Rama early morning on Saturday and after that they had also a phone conversation that was followed with some eight SMS messages by Hoxha.
Rama called police to file charges. If proved guilty, Hoxha he may be sentenced with a fine or up to one year imprisonment, according to the Albanian Penal Code.
Hoxha is a public defender lawyer that is often used by the courts for those people who cannot afford to pay a private lawyer in court cases. As such, he has been assigned to several high profile cases. Local media interviewed several people who knew the lawyer, indicating he has an alcohol abuse problem.
