TIRANA, Aug. 28 – The Interior Ministry reported that two million Albanians have already applied for the biometric passport and have received it.
“That is a consolidated achievement in the process of European integration and especially to make possible to the Albanian citizens to freely move in the Schengen area member countries,” said Deputy Minister Ferdinand Poni.
He also said that the number of application for the identity cards had reached 2.82 million near the end of July.
The company issuing the passports and Ids has increased the number of equipment for a larger number at this time when hundreds of thousands of Albanian immigrants come home for summer vacations.
Albania started issuing of the biometric passports and Ids two years ago, fulfilling an important request from the EU before it got the visa free regime last December.
Biometric passports record more personal data from an individual – such as their fingerprint- and store this on a microchip imprinted on the passport.
