TIRANA, Dec. 12 – A new 400 kV transmission link between Albania and Macedonia will be built by 2017 and put in function a year later trying to improve the two countries’ supply network and energy security.
The countries’ two energy ministers met last week Friday in Struga to discuss on the topic. Such a link will serve the two countries to get connected with the international network in the continent.
Albania will connect through Macedonia to
Bulgaria and Serbia. On the other side, Macedonia will connect through Albania to the Western European market via Italy thanks to a proposed underwater cable from Albania.
Albanian Energy Minister Damian Gjiknuri and his host Macedonian counterpart Bekim Neziri agreed on joint energy policies and energy resources leading to sustainable development.
“The project is going forward with the same speed on both sides of the border … The funding has been secured by both states so the project just needs the time to get completed,” according to Gjiknuri.
The total cost of the link will be 107 million euros covering 70 km in Albania and the rest to Macedonia. Other work will be done for the network equipment in the two countries.
