TIRANA, Aug. 6 – Albania’s southernmost town of Saranda will have a new quay for cruise ships visiting the coastal town by the end of this year, Transport Minister Sokol Olldashi has announced inspecting works in Saranda Port. The local port authorities have already signed the first 18 contracts for the cruise ships scheduled to visit Saranda next year.
The Saranda cruise ship port will have a 180 metre long quay with a depth of 9 metres, worth 440 million lek under a World Bank loan.
Currently, large cruise ships can only anchor in Durres Port.
Nicknamed as the pearl of Albania, the southern coastal town of Saranda is one of the top destinations in Albania known for coastal and archeological tourism, the latter represented by the Butrint park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A regular ferry line from neighbouring Corfu islandoperates daily.
