TIRANA, April 1 – Albania’s government has decided to build a new hospital for mentally-ill prisoners, officials said.
The new facility is very much needed, officials said, as the mentally ill have had to be housed in regular prisons or have been released during the post-communist two decades, which causes problems for everyone concerned.
The facility will be built at the Shish Tufine, in the outskirts of Tirana, at a former military base.
The news was made public Tuesday by Health Minister Ilir Beqja and his defense counterpart Mimi Kodheli.
During this time there have been many cases when mentally ill persons have committed crimes and fallen through the system.
