Albanians honor Police Captain Musa Skura’s life, given Nation’s Fallen title.
TIRANA, Jan. 22 – Police Captain Musa Skura, 49, who was injured during a police operation a week ago, died in a hospital in Italy Tuesday, leaving behind his wife and three children.
Skura was buried Thursday with full honors in Tirana and given the Nation’s Fallen title, reserved for military and police forces who fall in the line of duty.
Skura had worked for 28 years with police and was seriously injured during an operation when they were trying to block transport of weapons illegally from a group of persons. The incident occurred the previous Sunday when police were celebrating the 100th anniversary of their creation.
Skura’s death became subject of political debate as opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama said the government was not doing enough to protect police officers.
Rama also pledged than within 300 days of their return to power, after parliamentary elections in June 23, the people will see a difference of the general crime situation in the country. He said that in almost eight years in power for the governing Democratic Party the number of crimes has increased with some 20 per cent every year reaching more than 20,000.
Interior Minister Flamur Noka said the comments were untrue and accused Rama of cooperating with criminals for political purposes.
