TIRANA, Oct. 14 – The main opposition Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, has started a nationwide campaign, starting with southern towns where his party performed badly in the last elections, offering to the population and businesses his plan for a flat tax that is even lower that what his party used while in power until two years ago.
The winners of the last elections, the Socialist Party, switched to progressive taxation.
Basha said the flat tax will not be the previous 10 percent but rather 9 percent. He said it is the only way to help the people cope with the poverty and the economic crisis.
The opposition leader has not given clear details as to how the government is to secure the necessary money for the budget demands, however.
When the Democrats left power two years ago, they left a big hole in the budget, according to the current Socialist administration.
