GJIROKASTER, Oct. 1 – A few days after the media posted footage of a car accident which happened in Memaliaj, opposition deputy Enkeleid Alibeaj came forward and publicly blamed the Chief of Police in Gjirokastà«r, Lorenc Paganika, and subsequently the failure of the police in the face of organized crime.
The video shows a car injuring a pedestrian, and then leaving the crime scene in the direction it came from. In response to this, Alibeaj primarily blamed Paganika, whom he believes was responsible for the accident, for not assisting the pedestrian, as well as for trying to manipulate the event by immediately fixing his car and only then allowing an experts’ evaluation of the situation.
In addition to describing the incident and ensuring the victim’s life was out of danger, Alibeaj also added the following: “This incident, which is taped, shows the unprecedented behavior of a regional Chief of Police. The behavior of this Chief proves the condition of the entire state police, where Chiefs are above the law and have nothing in common with hundreds other honorable policemen.”
Moreover, Alibeaj said: “This is the truth. The police have failed in the face of organized crime and drug trafficking and cannot ensure its citizens’ security. This is the reality of Edi Rama’s government, where crime rules the country, drugs buy votes and Chiefs of police do not care about the law.”
Alibeaj’s accusations concerning the ineffectiveness of the law and the corruption within State Police are just few of the many directed towards the current government and its involvement with organized crime and drug trafficking and can only be expected to raise in response to efforts being made to reform the judiciary and the State Police in its entity.
