TIRANA, Sept. 25 – Albania’s two most senior officials have used a trip at the annual general session of the United Nations to promote key issues of interest in the international arena, meeting with UN, U.S. and other international senior officials as well as the Albanian diaspora.
President Bujar Nishani and Prime Minister Edi Rama spent several days in the United States as part of their official trip.
This was Rama’s first U.S. trip. He took the post earlier this month. He first visited Brussels to meet with top EU officials, after a visit to neighboring Kosovo.
One of the important moments was participation at the conference of the Clinton Global Initiative that debated on the role of women, human rights and other projects promoting energy and the clean environment.
During the meeting, Rama met with former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Kosovo counterpart Hashim Thaci.
Rama repeated that both countries aim at deepen relations. Rama also expressed Tirana’s determination to continue lobbying for Kosovo’s recognition in the world.
During the stay, there were also numerous meetings with senior world leaders also taking part in the U.N. annual session.
An important part of Rama’s trip was his meetings with the World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. It was clear that was one of the first steps of lobbying, or support that the Rama’s new government is taking from their key British adviser, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who accompanied Rama at the meeting.
Rama said that the World Bank leader showed great interest to support Albania. The World Bank is trying to carry out a different prospect of its investments around the world and Albania may be one of its targets or places where it will promote that.
Blair said that Albania has many challenges and a lot of work ahead.
Rama also took part at the party that U.S. President Barack Obama holds for the launch of the U.N. session.
“Prime Minister Rama thanked President Obama for the continuous support that he himself and the U.S. government has given to Albania and also assured him that our country will continue to be alongside the U.S. in the future,” according to an official stastement.
Meanwhile, President Nishani met with several organizations of the Albanian-American community in his visits to Detroit and New York.
