TIRANA, March 23 – The opposition Socialist Party criticized the prime minister for buying a new Mercedes car for his use at an extraordinary price for the tiny Balkan country.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha has bought an armored car for 500 thousand euro, or some 700 milli0on leks. The local media said the purchase was authorized by the Cabinet and was funded using money from a state fund for the liquidation of natural catastrophes. It is expected that the Mercedes Benz will be used by Berisha and the heads of visiting foreign delegations.
Socialist oppositionists have accused the minister of corruption and of misspending government money. Albania is one of the poorest European countries, with average monthly wages of 250 euro.
They said that the amount of money would be enough to raise the pensions for a considerable number of persons.
The political fight exploits any moment or act on both sides ahead of the May 8 local authorities’ elections.
