TIRANA, May 1 – A few hundred people held rallies in Tirana on the May Day, the international labor day.
Rallies were organized by communist parties and a non-governmental organization, Mjaft. Participation was meagre in both.
May Day is usually celebrated in Albania as a remnant celebration of the former communist regime, which held parades and rallies in its honor.
It also served as the day to mark a protest of the Red-and-Black Alliance against the government. Some 1000-2000 supporters gathered in front of the main government building, demanding the government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha be “cleansed” with the upcoming June 23 vote. But they also said they would not support Edi Rama of the main opposition Socialist Party as the next premier.
