verriaTIRANA, Aug. 18 – One of Albania’s icon actors, Albert Verria, passed away this week at 79 due to a grave disease. He is best remembered for his iconic macho role of uncle Sulo in the 1972 Kapedani movie under communism which is still admired by younger post-communist generations.

He was buried in Vlora, southern Albania, where he grew up as an artist.

“Leaving this world is human, but leaving with dignity is divine,” wrote Verria in one of his books.

In a message of condolences, President Bujar Nishani described Verria’s death as a great loss for Albanian culture and cinematography.

“Albert Verria, this master of drama came to cinema and theatre lovers with humor as a master of art conveying special emotions among everybody through comic situations in dramatic performances,” said President Nishani.
