TIRANA, May 27 – The Durr쳭Kuk쳭Morin롲oad project is a key connection between the port of Durr쳬 Albania’s primary seaport on the Adriatic Sea, and Kosovo. Authorities have planned to hold an inauguration ceremony Sunday with the participation of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Kosovar counterpart Hashim Thaci.
The 61-kilometer four-lane highway will stretch from the town of Rr촨en up to the northeastern village of Kalimash. It is believed that one of the 5.5 kilometer-long tunnels has already been completed. The second tunnel is expected to be completed in September of this year.
That segment is part of the 171-kilometer highway from the Adriatic Sea city of Durres up to the northeastern border with Kosovo that will cut travel time from six to two hours. It is believed it will also boost trade and tourism as Kosovars have become a main source for both Albania’s trade and tourism.
Construction started in May 2007 from the joint venture Bechtel-Enka costing at the start 418 million Euros, a figure that is believed to have already gone up to one billion.
The project is the largest employer in the area; out of the more than 3,500 people on the job, two-thirds are Albanian.
