TIRANA, Aug. 4 – A Russian tourist died in the beach of Livadh, in Himara southern Albania, this week after being hit by a jet ski. Denis Kaiumov, 43, was holidaying in Albania with his wife and child. He was swimming 50 meters from the shore when a jet ski hit him, injuring him severely in the head and upper body. When people reached him they found him still breathing but unconscious from the severe blow he had received to his head and torso. Back on shore, they rushed him to the hospital of Himara. He briefly woke up but then lapsed again into unconsciousness then died from severe injuries. The incident happened 50 meters from the shore. The person driving the jet ski without a boating license left the scene, but was later arrested and identified as Fatmir Kuci, a 44 construction entrepreneur from Elbasan.
Holiday makers in Livadh were left revolted due to the dangerous use of jet skis in the Albanian shores. Police forces have blamed local government officials for not taking proper measures against jet skis that are available for rent even if you have no boating license. Many tourists from Russia, Poland and Germany have chosen Albania for their summer holidays, however similar accidents that happen due to the lack of measures by state authorities are causing uncertainties among tourists and locals.
