TIRANA, July 7 – Albania’s southernmost costal city of Saranda will host a 10-day wind instrument festival bringing together orchestras and ensembles from the whole country and the region.
The festival’s fifth edition scheduled from July 10 to 20 will also move to the costal town of Himara.
This edition’s novelty is the Summer Music Academy which will offer a series of workshops to young instrumentalists aimed at preserving the 100-year-old tradition of Albanian wind orchestras.
The festival comes at the peak of the tourist season in Saranda, known for its pure Ionian waters which offer a mix of rocky and sandy beaches.
Wind orchestras from the Albanian cities of Tirana, Shkodra, Korca, Vlora, Fier, Elbasan and Saranda have confirmed their participation. Foreign wind orchestras from Greece, Italy and Macedonia will also perform in the festival.
The festival will be held under the auspices of Saranda Mayor Edmond Gjoka and conductor Edmond Doko.
The Wind Bands Festival is the only activity of this kind in Albania. The festival is a vital musical manifestation and a joyful event for the people. This festival is included in the annual calendar of the artistic events of the Ministry of Culture and that of the Saranda municipality.
