TIRANA, May 8 – Prosecutors of the Serious Crimes Court have expressed their reservations with regard to the constitutional amendments in the framework of the justice reform.

The Serious Crimes Court and Prosecution will be dissolved under the justice reform draft while their competences will be assigned to the Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime.  The draft provides for the transfer of the judges in other courts, while it does not mention what will happen with the prosecutors.

For this reason, the prosecutors of this institution have addressed a package of suggestions to the ad hoc committee on justice reform, which is currently discussing a final draft prepared with the assistance of international experts.Prosecutors say that the project does not specify their fate unlike it does with the judges.

Currently, there are 20 prosecutors who work at the Serious Crimes Court, who request to be treated on the same footing as the judges.
In their plight for fair treatment, the prosecutors brought as a reminder the fact that since its establishment, they have contributed in bringing before justice hundreds of dangerous criminals, part of organized crime, and international drug trafficking networks, who are currently serving their lengthy sentences thanks to the prosecutor’s efforts.
