SHIJAK, Sept. 19 – Following several public protests against a medical waste incinerator in an inhabited area in central Albania, unknown residents or opponents have taken matters into their own hands by placing small explosive devices at the company offices.

The company, Ecomedica, said it was transferring its waste management plant from the city of Shijak to another more appropriate area, following stiff opposition from nearby residents and two attacks with small explosive devices on company facilities.

The company owner Altin Lala’s other business facilities were also targeted.

The company announced through a press statement that it had applied for the plant to be relocated with the proper authorities.

The attacks come at a time when there is a strong national debate in Albania against waste imports, likely to lead to massive street protests and a referendum if politicians keep forcing legislation in favor of the businesses wanting to import and burn waste.
