TIRANA, April 26 – A resident of a village in Shkodra district that has been suffering from flooding this year harshly turned down the compensation given from the government, saying it was “ridiculous.” He used the money to buy candies, distributing them to the village residents.
Lush Ndoci, a middle-aged man, was shown in many television stations Monday distributing candies to the school students and local residents in the Trush village, Velipoja commune.
He was planned to get only 5,000 leks (about $50) as compensation for what he had lost in the three floods this year.
Ndoci said he had seen his name in the list accompanied with only that much money. Ndoci said that not only his house was destroyed, its equipment but he had also lost many sheep, cows and hens and his land was also destroyed.
People in northwestern Shkodra have suffered from flooding three times this year. Heavy rain have obliged authorities of the power corporation to open the gates of the three hydropower stations of the Drini River fearing if they let them the plants could be destroyed and all the northern area could be flooded.
In January about 11,000 hectares of land and some 5,000 houses were flooded with considerable damage. There was flooding also last week when the government said they had started financial compensation for what people lost or were damaged during the first flooding.
That seemed far from enough and authorities will have now to cope with the anger of the people having destroyed their houses and small businesses.
