The first regional market for agricultural products in southern Albania is built according to the latest standards with an investment worth 2 million dollars.
A new regional market for agricultural products has been established in Gjirokastra through a World Bank investment. Built by the Albanian government, the market will serve to boost domestic and international trade for farm products.
This is the first regional market of its kind in southern Albania and is built according to modern standards with an investment worth 2 million dollars.
Albania’s southern region has large resources in agriculture and livestock. This new market creates real opportunities for increased production and exporting.
“The market will be a tool to set in motion domestic production,” Agriculture Specialist Vangjel Ferro told the Albanian service of the German public broadcaster, DW.
While, Antonela Lena, chief of the agriculture and food control at the Regional Directorate of Agriculture added that for several years domestic production has had the potential to increase, but it was impossible to create the right conditions until now.
“This is certainly a pretty valuable investment, for the fact there will be opportunities for each farmer’s production entities to come on the market in the southern region,” Ms. Lena told DW.
The wholesale traders say the new market offers a good opportunity to properly coordinate sales in the whole region.
“I think that would be a good thing for the entire southern region,” one of the wholesalers, Dritan Shehu told DW.
The new market is also an opportunity boost production of organic products, as the area is clean from pollution and many farmers do not use chemicals in their production.
