TIRANA, Nov. 11 – Hundreds of public university students held a protest rally this week in front of the prime minister’s office to protest against a new higher education law, which they say makes it to expensive for them to attend school and shifts funding from public universities to private ones.

The protest came a week after a group of students were arrested after throwing eggs at the prime minister.

This week’s protesters staged a massive sit-down for an hour in Tirana’s main boulevard and waved signs in front of the government building.

The university reform was approved a few months ago to much opposition and will be implemented next year. Representatives of public universities and the political opposition say they are against the law.

However, the government says the law is needed, as it “guarantees fair competition and merit assessment, ending years of chaos and degradation of universities.”
