TIRANA, June 27 – The Supreme Court decided to give its verdict on whether to further proceed with the case against former deputy prime Minister Ilir Meta on July 11. This follows a complaint by Meta’s lawyers that the prosecutors had started the investigation while he was still under parliamentary immunity. Albania’s parliament lifted Meta’s immunity after he was accused of corruption in January when former Minister of Economy, Dritan Prifti, accused Meta of trying to bribe him over a state auction for a hydropower station. Meta, who denies wrongdoing, resigned in January. The scandal deepened the already evident political crisis, with the opposition demanding the government’s resignation.
