Consultancy-work on the purification of waste water and the construction of a sewage treatment plant in Tirana is the object of a contract that the Minister of Transports and Public Works, Sokol Olldashi, signed on the 19th of October with the Vice-President of a Japanese company, the Tokyo Engineering Co. Ltd. This contract was largely reported in the press (Gazeta Shqiptare, Standard, Agon 20.10.2009), who sees in the problems of waste water and sewage a big draw-back in the quality of life of the capital city and other cities of Albania and a threat to the development of tourism.

“Within a short time, the capital of Albania will have a modernized system for the purification of waste waters” believes Standard (20.10.2009).

According to the Minister of Transports and Public Works, the first phases of the contract on the project of the “Improvement of the system of canals for the Big Tirana” will last 12 months. The value of the projecting contract is reported to be 9.9 million Euros. The construction is reported to cost 106 million Euros. It will be financed by the Japanese government.

Actually the waste waters are thrown in the small rivulet which crosses Tirana, which is known under the name of Lana. Lana and Ish쭠are the most polluted rivers in Albania, writes Gazeta Shqiptare (20.10.2009). They are many times more polluted than the norms of the European Union, highlights the newspaper. Besides waste waters, inert waste is also thrown in these rivers, and travel to the sea. The high level of pollution is a major sanitary threat not only in the areas crossed by the rivers but also at sea, especially in the areas where these rivers run into the sea.
