TIRANA, June 10 – Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri and top policeman Artan Didi made a visit to nearby Italy Tuesday to meet with host Italian counterparts and try to increase cooperation and assistance from there in the fight against drug trafficking and planting.
Tahiri met with his host counterpart Angelino Alfano to discuss on the positive results of the increased cooperation between the two countries recently in the fight against drug and other illegal traffic.
Italy has been a main supporter of Albania’s police efforts in such a fight. It has also offered recently a plane to check the entire country on possible places of cultivation of drugs.
Albania is a transit point for hard drugs mainly coming from Asia and also a country of origin for cannabis sativa. Italy, only scores of sea miles from Albania, is one of the main targets that the illegal traffickers use to get the drugs further to Western Europe.
