A huge 550 meter square cake expected to break a new Guinness World Record will be prepared in the capital’s central square
TIRANA, Nov. 21- Already covered in national flags and portraits of national hero Skanderbeg and independence leader Ismail Qemali, Tirana will mark the centenary of anniversary with three days of celebrations.
Concerts, exhibitions, the inauguration of some new monuments, a Made-in Albania products trade fair and giant cake scheduled to break a World Record are some of the events the Municipality of Tirana has scheduled from November 26 to 28 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the country’s declaration of independence. Unveiling the municipality’s calendar of events this week, Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha hailed the festive atmosphere created on the verge of the centennial.
“I consider that beyond events, concerts, manifestations and statues and many other important works unveiled on the centenary of independence one of the biggest achievements is the experience of this national holiday by all citizens in different forms and full access to events organized and financed by the municipality, central government but even associations from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and the Diaspora,” said Basha.
Events kick off on Monday, November 26 with the commemoration of the flag-raising ceremony in Tirana on Nov. 26 1912, at the area near Ura e Tabakeve (Tanners bridge) where a stone mosaic of the national flag based on the coat of arms of the Muzakaj family will be placed. On Monday, a trade fair called “Buy Albanian products” will kick off at the pedestrian Murat Toptani street. Meanwhile, a huge 550 m2 cake expected to break a new Guinness World Record will start being prepared in front of the Opera House. On Oct. 26 at 13.00, a monument featuring a double-headed eagle, the symbol of Albania’s national flag will be placed at the roundabout near the customs directorate. The newly established National Youth Orchestra will also give concerts while rock and hip-hop bands will perform at the Murat Toptani pedestrian street.
On Tuesday, Nov. 27 the municipality says it will hand over CDs with patriotic songs to youngsters. A statue of Kosovo legendary hero Adem Jashari will also be placed in Tirana. Events will culminate on Nov. 28 when several children’s events, concerts and street performance are scheduled.
The southern coastal town of Vlora where independence was declared 100 years ago has also unveiled its calendar of events which start on Nov. 27 with the inauguration of a statue to independence leader Ismail Qemali. Several concerts and exhibitions will be held on Nov. 28.
