Two Albanian ballets to stage in Italy

TIRANA, Jan. 15 – Two ballet pieces choreographed by Ilir Kerni and Angelin Preljocaj will open the new season at the Luciano Pavarotti theatre in Italy’s Modena.

Ilir Kerni, the director of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, is participating with the Coppelia, a comic ballet, staged in Tirana last December.

Kerni, 59 a professional ballet dancer who spent most of his career as a soloist in Croatia, was appointed the director of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in October 2013, replacing maestro Zhani Ciko.

“La Stravaganza,” a ballet by renowned French choreographer of Albanian origin Angelin Preljocaj will also stage as part of Albania’s participation in the Modena theatre.

La Stravaganza, a show created by Preljocaj in 1997 for the New York City Ballet, will be a recreation of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet featuring Albanian ballet dancers. Preljocaj has described the show as inspired by his personal and double Albanian-French background. Ledia Sula, an Albanian ballet dancers will be performing in both pieces in the Jan. 16 show.
