TIRANA, April 13 – The US-based non-governmental organization YOUTHCOMPASS will hold a project in Albania this year along its commitment to challenging international teens to give of themselves to those less fortunate.
Through PROJECT COMPASSION, students have the chance to help people who can never repay them.
This year teens and leaders can make a difference in the lives of Europe’s poorest people. In the Albanian villages of Fushe Pestan, Lybesh and Vodice near the city of Berat, they will partner with two local doctors, the mayor and a local NGO called “Alongside You” to build two medical clinics and complete work in a third.
They will be mixing cement and pouring concrete floors, building interior and exterior brick walls, digging a trench and pouring footings for a fence, & installing windows and doors.
The need for basic medical care there is acute. In many villages, there are no clinics and the doctors make house calls. This means that there is no nurse, the lab consists of what the doctor can do from his or her car, and the number of patients who can be treated is significantly reduced. Village clinics, when built, can be staffed by a nurse and visited by the doctor. Basic lab tests are done at the clinics; inoculations are given; and children, pregnant women, the elderly, the injured and the sick are all treated there.
Every evening they will have a program with music, fun and an inspirational speaker. There will be international teens from all over the world.
