TIRANA, May 14 – Police reported Monday that a 52-year old man was arrested while trying to bring nine pistols into Albania from neighboring Kosovo.
Pjeter Vokrri, a resident of northern town of Rreshen, was arrested from police when he was trying to enter the Albanian border crossing point of Morini from Kosovo together with the nine pistols and ammunition he had hidden in his car. Later in his house police also found a Kallashnikov automatic rifle and about 2,000 rounds of ammunition.
Police said that the operation is part of a previous one when they arrested another Albanian trying to transport this time from Albania into Kosovo 3,800 rounds of ammunition.
Police reported they are continuing investigation to find other persons involved in such a dangerous traffic of weapons.
Despite many years passing since the hectic 1997 when all army depots were open and stolen, there are still hundreds of thousands of weapons running around the country. But recent arrests show that now time has come for the use of small weapons like pistols.
