A World Bank delegation is in Albania to monitor if WB projects have been in accordance with the priorities of the Albanian government.
TIRANA, Feb. 3 – A World Bank delegation met with Albania’s prime minister and other officials this week, discussing the bank’s new strategy of assistance to Albania.
The World Bank, mostly through its subsidiary, the International Finance Corporation, is helping Albania finance its rural infrastructure, health care, education, land reform, energy security and the private sector.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha met with Juan Jose Fernandez-Ansola and Jaime Jaramillo-Vallejo, who had arrived in Albania to conduct an independent assessment of the World Bank projects in Albania.
The delegation is in Albania to see more closely if the World Bank projects have been in accordance with the priorities of the Albanian government and if the bank’s new strategy meets the government’s goals.
Mr. Berisha said he thanked the World Bank as a donor and serious partner in the reforms that the Albanian government has undertaken.
The World Bank has financed close to 70 operations in Albania, since 1991 with financial resources of 1.4 billion dollars. These operations range from early reconstruction and rehabilitation, to institutional development in almost every area of economic and social work – financial sector and private sector development, education and health care, irrigation, administrative reform, energy, transport, forestry and environmental protection.
