Prime Minister Berisha promised investments in all of the country’s castles to promote tourisms and cultural heritage

TIRANA, August 10 – The Himara castle, one of the country’s oldest situated in the southern coastal town of Himara, is having its sewage and lighting system reconstructed under a joint European Commission and Albanian government fund worth 1 million euros, Prime Minister Sali Berisha said on Tuesday during a visit to the castle.
The castle’s cobbled streets are also being reconstructed under the project.
Speaking during his visit at the castle which dates back to the 4th century BC, Berisha promised investments in all of the country’s castles to promote tourisms and cultural heritage.
“The whole network of castles will be reconstructed, in Borsh, Himara and everywhere. Castles and sites where archaeological finds have been made are of special importance to attract tourists,” said Berisha.
He praised the castle history, describing it as one of the invincible strongholds of the Albanian nation. After the collapse of Kruja, Gjon Kastrioti, Skanderbeg’s son, decided to defend Albanian territories from Ottoman attacks the Himara castle.
Himara Castle was fortified by the Kaon tribe and is mentioned in Byzantine documents. It was repaired in the 6th century. Roman emperor Justinian had the castle rebuilt to defend against the attacks of the Barbarians and Goths.
