TIRANA, Aug. 7 – An anchor believed to be 200 years old has been discovered in the waters of Saranda, southernmost Albania. The six-metre anchor weighing 2.5 tonnes was found by a group of local fishermen in the Saranda waters quite accidentally.
Thoma Nika, a spokesman for the Saranda municipality said the local government is thinking of giving the giant anchor decorative values by placing it in one of the town’s squares or in another public space, as a symbol of the town port.
A more detailed assessment of the anchor’s exact age and the ship which used it will be made by experts of the Institute of Archaeology in Tirana. The anchor has been temporarily placed in the yard of the local orphanage in Saranda.
