BERAT, March 25 – Ray Bondin has been on an evaluation mission to the city of Berat in Albania, which is being nominated for recognition as a World Heritage site, at the request of the Venice Office of UNESCO. The city of Berat is one of the most historic cities in Albania, with three distinct but closely related historical areas. The uppermost area is what is known as the Castle, which is the fortified part of the town. Dr Bondin’s report was requested to clarify certain points relating to the authenticity and importance of the historical aspects of the city. During his visit, he met with various national and local government officials and was accompanied by two officials from the national and local office that deals with heritage. Berat is over two hours away by car from the capital and has very strong cultural influences from both the Orthodox Church and the Muslim period.
