TIRANA, April 15 – Sabri Godo, former leader and honored president of the rightist Republican Party, would be the best alternative, his party said. Party leader Fatmir Mediu said that Godo would be the best consensual candidate for the post. Thus Godo becomes the third candidate for the post following those of Bamir Topi of the governing Democratic party and Fatos Nano of a group of the opposition Socialist Party parliamentarians. Godo said at an interview with the Voice of America that Nano did not fulfill the necessary conditions for the posts, mentioning credibility. Another topic sparking interest in the political arena has been Godo’s suggestion to create a bicameral parliament, adding a Senate in an effort to give an end to poltiical squabbling often blocking work of the legislation. That would certainly ask for a constitutional amendment. Godo has been one of the authors of the 1998 constitution. Though remaining in the backstage the old politicians has often come out with interesting ideas attracting the attention of the political circles.
Presidential elections and the congress of the opposition Socialists electing their new leader will remain the main topics of the political debate over the next months.
