One of the largest impediments to increased tourism in Albania is the pollution of sea waters, especially in the Adriatic. The Albanian Institute of public health has conducted several studies and pointed out beaches so heavily polluted that it is recommended people keep out of the water. Such areas exist in Durres, Golem and Vlora. This is the result of the sewage canalizations that link urban centers with the sea and where the waste is left unprocessed. Processing technology is unavailable and often huge canals discharge waste close to public beaches. Often the waste comes from irresponsible construction projects which abound throughout the coast line.
