TIRANA, July 17 – U.S. Assistant Defense Secretary Larry Butler visited Albania on Tuesday to meet with local defense officials.

Albanian Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu stressed the fact they intended increased cooperation with American authorities in the future to modernize their army and make other reforms required before becoming full NATO members.

Mediu repeated that Albania was determined to continue its presence and participation in the international peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan and Iraq, which has brought new experience to the country’s armed forces.

Albania hopes to be invited to join NATO as a full member in next spring’s summit in Bucharest.
