TIRANA, Oct. 19 – Omonia, the association of the Greek minority in Albania, criticized the Albanian Government for shutting down the transmitting antennas of five Greek TV stations in southern Albania.
Omonia raised accusations that the Greek-language TV programs watched by the Greek minority have been shut down on purpose.
But Albanian authorities denied there was any discrimination, adding that antennas of all private television stations exceeding the territory where they were allowed to broadcast were also removed. The Albanian Broadcasting Council set out a country-wide action for shutting down the TV stations that lack proper broadcasting licenses. The Council announced that, except for those in south Albania, a number of other TV stations in the central part of the country have been closed.
