TIRANA, Nov. 2- Tirana International Airport (TIA) has become the first private company in Albania to have its own Waste Water Treatment Plant. The treatment plant commenced operations in July 2007 and purifies waste water from the passenger terminal, operations and administration buildings, as well as from aircraft. The plant has a capacity to treat 130 cubic meters of waste water daily before final discharge into the River T쳫uza.
Furthermore, with the opening of the new passenger terminal TIA began implementing modern waste management concepts. The new terminal provides passengers and Airport users with a system of recyclable and non-recyclable waste sites with separate waste bins. Throughout the Concession Area such bins are provided for plastics, cans, paper and cardboard, wood and other waste.
This and other news are published in the 2007 issue of TIA’s Environmental and Social Bulletin, which details the recent challenges in environmental protection being dealt with at the Airport. The current, second, issue informs readers about the implementation of TIA’s Environmental and Quality Management System, oriented to ISO standards 14001:2004 and 9001:2000. It deals as well with the Airport’s monitoring of air, wastewater, potable water quality and noise levels. All indicators confirm that TIA is complying fully with Albanian, European Union and the World Health Organization’s standards.
“Environmental issues at the Airport are being tackled with care and determination. TIA, fully aware of its social responsibilities, is putting a huge amount of effort into contributing towards improving the quality of life for the local residents through respecting the environment and initiating important development projects,” said TIA Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Andrea Gebbeken in her opening message in the bulletin.
Committed also to social initiatives, TIA, in close cooperation with local authorities and residents, has initiated and been contributing towards important local development projects, such as the preparation of a tourism development plan for Preza Castle and its surrounds. The Company makes sure to involve the local community in important events taking place on or near its premises. TIA is also hosting environment awareness raising activities with guided tours of the Concession Area.
The 2007 Environmental and Social Bulletin follows on from the information provided in the first issue, published in 2006, which detailed the performance of TIA’s environmental and social engagements since the company was founded in 2005. The bulletin is available from the TIA website www.tirana-airport.com.
