TIRANA, Nov. 21 – Spiro Peci of the Human Rights Union Party has remained as the only member, also chairman, of the parliamentary committee in charge of the reform in the judiciary.
The political parties have not named any member for the committee.
Peci said that the lack of the members does not make it possible to start operation and he blamed all the political parties for that.
The two main political parties, as usual, blame each other.
Fatmir Xhafa of the main opposition Socialists blamed the majority Democrats of Prime Minister Sali Berisha who have conditioned the reform in the judiciary with the dismissal of Prosecutor General Theodhori Sollaku and “the nomination of a person who would better serve its power.”
The reform in the judiciary is urgently needed by the country.
All international institutions have been insistently repeating to Albania senior officials they meet that the reform in the judiciary is a fundamental step they should undertake if the country aims at joining NATO and the European Union.
Albania’s parliament has voted to oust Sollaku for allegedly breaking the constitution and not fighting organized crime and corruption.
Now it is up to President Bamir Topi to decide whether to ratify such a proposal.
