U.N. drugs official visits Albania

TIRANA, Nov. 26 – Deputy Interior Minister Gent Strazimiri met Monday with Theodore Leggett of the U.N. Drugs and Crime office to discuss on crime and stability in the Balkans.
Strazimiri introduced the government’s efforts to fight drug trafficking with a zero tolerance policy, which has had its positive results.
Leggett of the department of analyzes and research also met with top Albanian policeman Ahmet Prenci.
Prenci told him that Italian authorities had found only 40 kilograms of cannabis transported from Albania this year compared to more than nine tons more than ten years ago. The top policeman also said that Albanian police had closely collaborated with international counterparts in 13 operations this year. This year police has found 126 kilograms of heroin, 12 kilograms of cocaine, some four tons of hashish and eliminated about 200,000 plants of cannabis sativa. A day earlier, on Sunday police stopped more than two tons of cannabis trying to cross into Greece.
