TIRANA, Dec. 10 – The Constitutional Court heard claims from the former Prosecutor General Theodhori Sollaku on Monday, claiming it was unconstitutional to remove him from his post and also saying it was unconstitutional for parliament’s lawyer to support that act.
But the court gave no date when it would decide whether Sollaku’s removal was legal.
Sollaku was removed from his post last month after the country’s president, Bamir Topi, supported a report of a parliamentary investigative committee claiming Sollaku had broken laws and let criminals free from prison throughout the country.
The opposition did not take part in the committee and voted against its report, claiming that Prime Minister Sali Berisha, also a leader of the governing Democratic Party, was trying to consolidate all of the country’s powers under his control.
Sollaku was replaced last month by Ina Rama.
Five years ago, the Constitutional Court decided against the parliament’s move in a similar case, firing Sollaku’s predecessor, though such a ruling does not mean he could get regain his lost post.
