TIRANA, Dec. 14 – Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha said Friday his country was ready to open its borders with Kosova if Serbia imposed a trade blockade if the province declares independence.
“It cannot be excluded that after the proclamation of independence, Serbia takes decisions which could cause Kosova citizens economic difficulties,” said Berisha.
“If Serbia imposes an economic embargo on Kosova, Albania will open its borders to help the Kosova people. The government of Tirana will also engage all its capacities so that Kosova can benefit from the Albanian infrastructure and have access to Albanian ports.”
Albania is currently constructing a road across its mountainous border to link its ports with Kosova, a Serbian province whose ethnic Albanian leaders say will soon declare unilateral independence.
Kosova has been supervised by a U.N. mission since mid-1999, when a NATO bombing campaign stopped a crackdown by Belgrade-controlled forces on its Albanian people.
