Palermo, Jan. 21 – The Moncada Construction Group of Agrigento, the fifth largest Italian producer of wind power, received approval earlier this month from the Albanian government for the construction and operation of an underwater power line to be installed between the Italian and Albanian coasts. The line will be able to transmit 500 MW and 400 kV voltage.
The power line, which will cost 240 million Euros will be 145 km long, including 130 km under water.
It will be placed on the sea beds of the Otranto Canal in Albanian port city of Vlora and South Italian city of Brindisi.
The line will be about 900 meters deep in water.
Further, it will export energy produced in Albania to the Balkan Peninsula and also into Italy.
It will also strengthen the electricity system of cross-border interconnections between Italy and neighboring European countries.
The energy production plant, authorized in December by the Albanian government, has a potential of 500 MW, which is ‘the biggest’ wind farm ever built in Europe, expected to cost 750 million Euros.
