TIRANA, March 24 – The Ministry of the Environment said they have set aside a landfill some 2.5 kilometers from the Gerdec blast where soil from the affected area will be brought.

Experts believe up to half a meter of soil from the area should be removed because it may have been infected from the chemicals following the explosions.

Experts said tests show the surrounding air is not polluted, though area water could not be used for drinking.

Thousands of tons of explosives, perhaps between 1,400 to 3,000 tons, exploded March 15 killing at least 22 persons, injuring more than 300 and also polluting the land in the area.
