Tax officials sentenced to prison

TIRANA, April 4 – Tirana district court pronounced sentencing of 15 years for seven former tax officials accused of corruption.
The seven former tax officials, sentenced from ten months to three years each, have pleaded guilty to the charge of corruption. They will also pay a fine of 4.4 million leks and have to serve one-third less of the sentence because of pleading guilty.
The officials were found guilty of seeking bribes from businesses in exchange for letting them avoid regular taxation. Evidence showed the officials threatened to set heavy fines for the businesses unless they agreed to pay a bribe of up to 4,00 Euros.
