SARANDA, April 21 – High-school students in the southern town of Saranda held a protest on Sunday, tearing apart and burning a Greek flag in reaction to the recent ethnic flare up in the southwestern port town of Himara. Enraged students protested against the inscription, “Himara is Greek”, that appeared on a wall of the Saranda high school building.
Local police considered the protest illegal, though there were no attempts to stop it. Earlier this month, members of the Greek minority community in Himara clashed with police in response to the arrest of two members of their organization, “Omonia”, for refusing to show any identification, as well as for resisting arrest. Himara’s mayor, Vasil Bollano, accused local police of using excessive force.
The two arrested persons were kept at the police station for two hours and then freed. Police also suspended two policemen until the completion of an investigation about the arrests.
