VLORA, April 23 – Italy will assist Albania in clearing its seashores of mines and shells left there since World War II and again during the 1997 anarchic year.
This summer, Italy will send experts to coordinate efforts with Albanian Marines to clear the area near Vlroa Castle, in the southwestern seaside, where there are hundreds of shells and other ammunition as close as a few meters under water.
No one has been able to estimate how many shells must be removed, except to say there are a considerable number of them. An old man, who once served as driver, said some 70 trucks filled with ammunition had been dumped into the sea in 1945. (Tirana Times Staff)
