TIRANA, Jan 26 – The country’s two main political parties, the governing Democratic Party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the main opposition Socialist Party of Tirana Mayor Edi Rama, have begun negotiations on forming the new central election commission as called for in the new electoral law passed last month.
The new CEC will be made up of seven members, down from nine in the previous commission.
The commission is expected to be formed by the end of this month. The new commission members are expected to be approved this week by the parliament.
Albania will hold parliamentary elections June 28 based upon the new regional electoral law.
The European Union and the international community have said that elections will be decisive as the country seeks further integration in the bloc.
