Swedish speaker in Albania

TIRANA, Feb 3 – Swedish parliamentary Speaker Per Westerberg held a first-ever visit to Albania to meet with his counterpart Jozefina Topalli and also other top Albanian officials.
During the visit Westerberg discussed with Topalli, President Bamir Topi and Prime Minister Sali Berisha bilateral relations and also regional issues.
Albania’s integrating steps toward NATO and the European Union were other top issues to be dealt with.
Sweden was also among the first countries to recognize Kosova as an independent state less than a month after it declared independence on February 17th of last year.
Sweden will also be the EU’s rotating presidency following the current Czech administration.
Westerberg hailed Albania’s moderating role in the region. He also said that Sweden was in favor of extending the EU with other countries from the western Balkans.
“I believe that Albania, as a European country, should be part of the EU when it has fulfilled the requirements,” he said.
