TIRANA, March 31 – Anisa Sogani was one of the hundreds of injured people from the blast at the ammunition disposal factory in Gerdec last year. Moreover, she also lost her child that she was to give birth to.
For this reason she is suing the government, after receiving no compensation.
Anisa and her husband Adriatik sued the Ministry of Defense’s commercial weapon company MEICO (Military Export Import Company), the Ministry of Defense and the US Company Southern Ammunition Company Inc. asking them to pay 10 million lek (about 100,000 USD).
Twenty-six people died, 264 were injured and thousands of homes and business constructions were damaged from the March 15, 2008 blast.
Former Minister of Defense Fatmir Mediu, army chief of staff, other military and civil officials at the ministry, including the owner and a manager of the private disposal company have been charged with abuse of post and four of them with murder as well, for which they may be sentenced up to life imprisonment if proved guilty.
