TROPOJA, June 15 – What had become almost a taboo topic in Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s life over the last 12 years became a reality this week.
Berisha went to his hometown of Bajram Curri during his electoral campaign for the June 28 parliamentary elections.
The move was a clear challenge to his rival, Edi Rama, of the main opposition Socialist Party, who had repeatedly provoked him for not going to his hometown.
Berisha had not gone to his area since 1997.
Born in the village of Vicidol in the Tropoja district, Berisha left his home to follow schooling in the capital Tirana where he remained afterwards to become a doctor.
Amid tight security measures, Berisha made significant promises to his people in the area, on improving roads, rehabilitating schools, improving health service and promoting economic development.
