238 policemen killed in post-communist Albania

TIRANA, Aug 10 – The killing of four police officers by Dritan Dajti was one of the most aggravated cases of the loss of life by police forces in post-communist Albania.
Local media reported that the police death toll has continued in the last years, though it was more conspicuous during the first years of 1990. Its total is 238.
Following the recent murder of four policemen authorities tried to insist that fighting organized crime remains the focus of the Interior Ministry.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha also made another step to assure the support to the police, declaring as “Martyrs of Nation” the recently deceased police officers Fatos Haqir Xhani, Kastriot Ȭirim Feskaj, Saimir Islam Du謯llari and Altin Idriz Dizdari who were killed during a midday police operation in the attempted arrest of convicted murderer Dritan Dajti.
The government declared Saturday a national day of mourning.
Flags flew at half-mast at all state institutions. At midday, a minute of silence was observed to honor the four martyrs of the nation. Official homage to honor the police officers fallen on duty was held at the venues of the Palace of Congresses and their funeral at the Martyrs of the Nation Cemetery.
